National Sickie Day: peak number of staff call in ‘ill’ by bobbyksa

The first Monday in February is thought to be the worst day for people pulling ‘sickies’ with up to 350,000 employees expected to ring in and make their excuses.

Experts fear that the absence of so many workers could cost the industry more than £30 million.

However, a study indicates that bosses are becoming too soft on their staff, accepting emails or texts to say they are ‘ill’ rather than the traditional phone call.

More than a quarter of British companies trust workers who claim illness without speaking to them directly, making it easier for fakers to lie, according to research by Employment Law Advisory Services.

Peter Mooney, a spokesman for the firm, said: “The traditional phone call was always a way for bosses to decipher whether staff members were bluffing or genuinely ill.

“So the system will be open to more abuse than ever. The cost to the economy could soar. That is the last thing we need as we are slowly crawling out of the deepest recession for generations.”

Half the 1,500 company managers polled in the survey were not convinced by the excuses given for a day off.

Questionable excuses ranged from a man who claimed that the road outside his house was too busy to cross to another worker who said he could not make it in because his mother-in-law was supposed to die at the weekend but had not.

Rebel Emergency at Sound Academy Dec 23rd by bobbyksa

We at U&F don’t care much for Christmas; I mean it’s not even Jesus’ real birthday.   We prefer to jet off somewhere hot!  This year we will be surfing in the Caribbean; yes, there is a few places to surf in the Caribbean…… but we are keeping the locations hush hush -  don’t want the paps following Bobby us.  I mean even the fabulous need some R&R!

So when we found out that Rebel Emergency was doing a concert at the Sound Academy we thought this would be the PERFECT send off to the islands.  Rebel Emergency’s sound is a mix of rock & reggae…. and the guys have a kick ass live show! Their cd was produced by Commissioner Gordon, the same man who produced Lauryn Hill’s and the Fugees’ albums! They sold out Mod Club for their CD release, and now LIVE NATION is sponsoring them to headline their big Christmas concert. This show is a big deal for Rebel, and it could be the start of something really special for this Scarborough band.

Our favourite song is “Love Ain’t Free” as Lisa’s boyfriends have all learned and the funnest beach song is “Summer Gold”; you can count we’ll have our iPods on repeat to Rebel Emergency this Christmas beach holiday!  Check out their tunes at http://www.myspace.com/rebelemergencymusic

Get your cheap tickets anywhere tickets are sold (or at the door) and send us off down south on December 23rd to the tunes of Rebel Emergency!

Shaun Boothe brings 3D back to hip hop by Lisa

shaun

The club was poppin’ off last week, with Shaun Boothe’s “Hip Hop in 3D” event at Circa nightclub.  The night served not only as a raging party, it also premiered Shaun’s new video “Poor Boy” (a hawt and dirrrty track!)…the track is fantastic, the video really sets it apart from the regular ass-n-titty/money-money videos that saturate the hip hop market.  Part of the deal: 3d glasses handed out at the party – keep them if you were there!  The album artwork on the cd is done in 3D (and you can always use them for the Night of the Living Dead 3D remake, which never comes with the 3D glasses when you rent them, probably cuz people like Bobby steal them.)

They often say there are 3 sides to the story; one side, the other side and the truth. Shaun is an artist whose music speaks to that 3rd angle.  In a rap world of super-gangsters and pimps, preachers and revolutionaries, Shaun’s music is alien.  Discontent with the current state of what he sees as “1 dimensional” rap music, Shaun Boothe always brings the 3rd dimension out. When attacking a concept/subject he shows all the angles.

One of the really cool things Shaun’s done is his autobiography series.  He does a rap song sharing the life of someone famous, from all different angles, of course.  At the party we got to hear/see his rap and video for the lives of Mohammed Ali and Puff Daddy.  Now, these two celebs in particular have so many biographies and the like done about them.  Overdone you might even say.  But here’s where Shaun has done the unimaginable.  I don’t know how he did it, but he’s managed to put a freshness and – you guessed it – a new dimension on their remarkable lives.

If you missed it, I’m sorry.  Truly.

Here’s a taste of what you missed – Poor Boy (Dirty) – Shaun Boothe (it’s a mediafire file, hooray! not annoying!)

There are honestly too many stories from this amazing night to tell, so we will try to illustrate it with just a few pictures.  Cuz really, if you missed it, that’s kinda your fault.  We DID warn you it was going to be the bees knees.

Roosevelt Room Opener…the GotStyle afterparty! by Lisa

CIMG1210 2

The Roosevelt Room opens its doors officially next weekend on Saturday, November 7th, but for those of us who were lucky enough to grab some pre-opening event invites, this past weekend was full of R&R (Roosevelt Room, yes.)  I’m not gonna lie, the DJ wasn’t quite on his game…but considering it was a special pre-opener event (the GotStyle fashion week after party) I’m pretty sure he was hired on for the night, and won’t be their resident for Friday nights.  Hopefully.  (He wasn’t THAT bad, he was just all over the place, and didn’t really know how to mix all that well – I really hope I’m not shooting myself in the foot with this one, because near the end I saw the club owner at the tables…hopefully it wasn’t him all night.  Logically though, it wasn’t as he was busy for a good amount of the time doing shots at the bar, in his very nice white suit.)  Some local and not-so-local known faces were out and about for this event, including GotStyle’s Melissa Austria, who always knows how to throw a good party, and producer Niv Fichman, known for his hand in Paschendaele and The Red Violin, amongst other works.

The BEST part about this club was the decor, by far.  And seeing as the other aspects were superb, it just goes to show how bang up the decor really was.  Think art deco, 1920′s glamour.  The colours, the lighting, the statues…everything grew together to create an amazing ambience that I really kept gushing about all night.  Probably really annoying for those around me, but what can I say?  I REALLY loved it, lol.  Adding to the 1920′s-ness of the place was the fact that the entrance was nicely tucked away down Drummond Place (off Adelaide, near Peter)…just enough to give the feeling of a hush hush speakeasy.  Perfect.

Paul Hardy at the Toronto LG Fashion Week 2009 by Lisa

Calgary’s Paul Hardy opened Wednesday’s runway shows with a bang…a soothing, melodic, stylized bang.  So maybe not a bang, but you know what I mean.  His runway show and Spring/Summer 2010 Collection – dedicated to the patriarchal females of East Africa – was dominated by white flowing fabrics, the elements of nature (including “croc”, “cocoon”, and “garden” skirts) and pencilled on brows and staches.  Yes, this was an all-female cast of models (courtesy of Elmer Olsen Model Management), and yes, I said eye brows and moustaches.  It was actually spectacular.  When the drawn on models came up on the runway, it caused a stir, but the audience deduced the theme connection pretty quickly (patriarchal females of East Africa), and settled into loving the statement.  The choice of music was also apt, with the soothing sounds of “The Mission” by Enio Marricone, “Prayer Cycle” by Alanis Morissette, and the Easy Virtue Orchestra (which I ran home to download, be sure to check it out).  Seeing so much white (every outfit was white) made me really miss the summer…here’s to Spring/Summer 2010!  I’ll be waiting for ya!

new-moon-wolf-pack

The countdown begins!  With 29 days til New Moon drops in theatres, I’m one happy Team Jacob gal.  And what  better way to celebrate the impending amazing-ness than with a new trailer!  This one really focuses on the wolves so I love it.  And they’ve done a good job at de-cheesing what should actually be a really impossibly goofy thing: the transition of human to wolf.

Go Team Jacob!!!

Enjoy!  I am, over and over and over!

Smirnoff Experience at Circa, Thursday, October 22 – PLUS U&F CONTEST PRIZE PACK! by Lisa

houseparty_flyer

Rock it at Circa this Thursday!

The Smirnoff Experience parties have always been insane, definitely something you don’t want to miss.  When you combine it with the Casby’s after party and Circa’s “house party” theme, it’s kinda a no brainer.  You wanna go, so just go, okay?

The Casby’s are Canada’s awards for independant and alternative music, so expect to see a lot of Canuck musical talent around (think hot artists, and hotter groupies who want to talk with them – there’s only so many of column a, and tons of column b – you do the math…clean up with column b overloads), plus some more special guests we are working on…will leak once it’s confirmed (if you like erotica, you’ll be pretty excited, is all I have to say about that.)

But music and sex aside (though really, that should be enuf for the average bear) you’ll want to come to see the impressive get up Circa will be in.  Seriously, I can’t even think of a word to describe the madness.  They’re going all out to bring you a sensational night.  I don’t want to spoil it, buuuuuuttttt……..think huge installations.  And considering this is Circa, which already has huge installations, I think you can just imagine how intense these will be, if they’re to beat their usual suspects.  There will be a full kitchen in the main room, a large garage on the stage, that opens up to have USS (and Autoerotique and Jainism) perform from the inside… a hot tub with balls. skate boarders doing tricks, rockband…and…

Two lucky ducky U&F’ers (remember that game Lucky Ducky at Canada’s Wonderland? I used to love it, cuz no one could lose.  Not that I’m not down with competition.  On the contrary.  I just suck at carnival games) will get the ultimate fun pack.  This includes free cover (for you plus one), line bypass (for you plus one), and free somethings which we’re not allowed to legally post (for you plus one).  Which should be easy to figure out.  C’maaaaan put two and two together.  It can rhyme with all of the following:  cruise, crinks, and calcohawl.  If you can’t figure it out from there, you probably deserve to be U&F, and not in the good way.  You probably got fired for having stones in your brain.  You probably don’t even pick up on the dis and are not offended at all.  (So if that’s you, just to be clear, going back to the contest deets, there will be 2 winners who each have one guest = four lucky duckies in reality.)

How do you get this pack?  Send an email to unemployedandfabulous@yahoo.com with your best answer to the question below, we’ll pick our faves and contact you before Thursday night.

Contest Question:  If you were stranded at Circa with only Smirnoff vodka, and could only have three things with you, what would they be?
